The Care and Grooming of Collies
The Collie is a hardy breed and like all dogs need regular grooming, exercise and good nutrition. For new Collie owners, a conversation with the breeder will help give the puppy a good start.
Nutrition. Like people, maintaining good health depends on eating a proper diet of quality food. The first step in deciding what to feed your Collie is talking to your dog’s breeder and other Collie owners.

Health. While Collies are generally a healthy breed, they do have certain health issues. A good breeder will have the eyes of all puppies checked for Collie Eye Anomaly and provide a certificate to new owners. Collies may also be sensitive to certain medications so it is important to ask questions of your veterinarian.

Grooming. Both rough and smooth Collies should have regular brushing of their coats as well as periodic bathing and toenail trimming.

Exercise and training. Collies are an active breed and need regular exercise. They enjoy being with people and love going on walks or hikes, or playing fetch in the yard. Smart and with a willingness to please, Collies quickly learn basic manners as well as tricks, competition obedience, agility, herding and many other skills. A versatile dog, Collies are happiest working with people and performing a job, whether herding or being a companion.
